๐ŸŒฑ Our Child Safety Charter (plain English)
Haere Tahi helps families connect โ€” but parents always remain responsible for deciding who their child travels with. We encourage families to meet first, confirm arrangements directly with each other, and make sure every child knows exactly who is responsible for them at drop-off, at pick-up, and while at the venue. A lift is just a lift: drivers kindly share their empty seats, and are not supervisors, caregivers or instructors. Under-16s' trips require a parent or guardian's approval in the app before they can be finalised, and no young member's account works at all until an adult confirms they look after them. Under-13s can see their trips but cannot arrange them. Before anyone can offer seats they must confirm a short driver declaration โ€” that they hold a current licence, that their insurance covers giving lifts at no charge, and that they will carry passengers legally including child restraints. All driver and vehicle details, including that declaration and the WoF and registration dates, are self-declared by members and are not checked or verified by Haere Tahi. You can block a member, report a concern, or delete your account at any time from within the app.

1. Agreement

By registering for or using Haere Tahi ("the Platform") you accept these Terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the Platform. If you register a person under 18, you accept these Terms on their behalf as their parent or legal guardian. Acceptance is recorded electronically at registration.

2. What Haere Tahi is โ€” facilitation only

The Platform is a noticeboard that helps registered members share information about travel to and from sporting venues. Haere Tahi and its operators do not organise, supervise, provide, endorse, or participate in any trip, transport, ride, or activity arranged through the Platform. We are not a transport operator, travel agent, carpool service, event organiser, or childcare provider.

2A. Ride sharing only โ€” no obligation to participate together, no supervision

The Platform exists solely to share travel to and from venues. Sharing a vehicle does not create a riding or activity group, and no participant is obliged to ride or participate with any other participant at the venue. Unless the members concerned expressly agree otherwise between themselves, a driver who transports another rider โ€” including a child โ€” is not that rider's supervisor, caregiver, guide, or instructor, owes them no duty of care beyond driving lawfully, and has no responsibility for them at the venue, on the trails, or at any other time. Parents and guardians remain solely responsible for their children at all times, including while the child is at a venue without them.

3. No vetting or verification

We do not vet, background-check, licence-check, or otherwise verify any member, driver, vehicle, or information posted on the Platform. Before a member can add a vehicle, post a trip, or offer to drive, we require them to complete the driver declaration in clause 6A and to record their vehicle's Warrant of Fitness and registration expiry dates. These are the member's own statements about themselves. We do not sight, request, check, or verify any driver licence, insurance policy, warrant, registration, or other document, and we carry out no criminal-history, driving-history, or medical checks on any member. Where the Platform shows that a member has completed the driver declaration, that means only that the member has made those statements. It is not an endorsement, a certification, an assurance, or any suggestion by us that the statements are true. You are solely responsible for deciding whether to travel with, or entrust your children to, any other member. Meet people you do not know before agreeing to share transport, and satisfy yourself about their suitability.

4. Assumption of risk

Adventure sports such as mountain biking are dangerous activities that can cause serious injury or death. Road travel also carries risk. You participate in all trips, rides, and transport arranged through the Platform entirely at your own risk (and, for your children, at your risk as their parent or guardian). To the maximum extent permitted by New Zealand law, Haere Tahi and its operators accept no responsibility or liability for any injury, death, loss, damage, delay, or cost arising from or connected with any trip, transport, ride, or interaction arranged through the Platform.

5. Children and guardians

Members under 18 must be linked to a parent or legal guardian, who supervises their use of the Platform. That link requires the adult's confirmation. A young member gives their guardian's email address at registration, and the account does nothing until that adult confirms, in their own Haere Tahi account, that they look after them. A guardian may withdraw that confirmation at any time, which suspends the young member's account until an adult confirms it again. A guardian must be an adult member.

Members under 13 have view-only accounts. They may see trips they are on and receive notifications; they cannot post a trip, request a seat, add a vehicle, drive, or rate another member. A parent or guardian arranges travel on their behalf from their own account. Members aged 13 to 15 may post trips and request seats, subject to the guardian approval below.

Trips planned by members under 16 require guardian approval within the Platform before finalisation; this is an administrative feature only and does not transfer any responsibility to Haere Tahi. Decisions about a child joining a trip, travelling in another member's vehicle, or participating at any venue are made solely by that child's parent or guardian. Haere Tahi has no role in, and accepts no responsibility for, the supervision or care of children at any time.

6. Drivers and vehicles

Any member who drives is solely responsible for: holding a current and appropriate New Zealand driver licence; the vehicle's registration, Warrant of Fitness, and roadworthiness; the accuracy of any vehicle details, WoF, or registration dates they declare on the Platform; appropriate insurance, including confirming that their policy covers carrying passengers on lifts given at no charge; securely fitting and loading any rack or carrier within its rated capacity; child restraints as required by law; and driving safely and legally at all times.

6A. Driver declaration

Before you can add a vehicle, post a trip, or offer to drive on the Platform, you must confirm each of the following about yourself and any vehicle you drive on Haere Tahi trips:

The declaration must be confirmed in full โ€” there is no partial declaration. It lasts twelve months, after which you will be asked to confirm it again before you can next add a vehicle, post a trip, or offer to drive. Each declaration is recorded with the date it was given and the wording you agreed to, and that record is kept for as long as your account exists.

You must not confirm the declaration if any part of it is untrue, and you must stop offering seats if it stops being true before it expires. Giving a false declaration is a serious breach of these Terms and we may suspend or terminate your account for it. As stated in clause 3, we do not check any part of the declaration.

7. No payment โ€” lifts are free

Haere Tahi is free to use and lifts must be given at no charge. The Platform has no payment, booking, or cost-sharing facility. We charge no member fee, booking fee, commission, or subscription to anyone, including clubs and schools.

Members must not request, offer, or accept any payment, fare, fuel contribution, koha, or other reward โ€” whether money or a benefit in kind โ€” in connection with a ride arranged through the Platform, and must not use the Platform to operate a commercial passenger service or any transport service for hire or reward. Any arrangement of that kind is a breach of these Terms and we may suspend or terminate the accounts involved.

Why this rule is strict: under the Land Transport Act 1998 a service becomes a passenger service, or a facilitated cost-sharing arrangement, once a driver is carried for hire or reward โ€” and "reward" is broader than a fare, including payment by a third party and non-monetary benefits. NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi confirmed in writing on 17 August 2026 that no transport service licence is required for Haere Tahi because no payment or reward of any kind is exchanged. Keeping every lift free is what keeps that true for all of us.

8. Member conduct

You must provide true registration details (including a valid New Zealand mobile number and email address), keep your login secure, use the Platform only for arranging shared travel to sporting venues, and treat other members with respect. You must not harvest members' information, harass anyone, or post unlawful, misleading, or offensive content. The Platform has no photo, image, or file upload of any kind โ€” you cannot upload a profile picture, a photo of a bike, or a photo of a child. We may remove content or suspend or terminate accounts at our discretion, without notice, where we consider these Terms have been breached.

8A. Blocking, reporting a concern, and closing your account

Blocking. You can block any member from their trip page or from Me โ†’ Blocked members. Once blocked, you will not see their trips, and neither of you can request a seat from the other. Blocking is silent โ€” the member you block is not told, and you can undo it at any time.

Reporting a concern. You can report a concern about a member or a trip from the trip page. Reports go to kiaora@haeretahi.com with the reason you choose and what you tell us, and we will look into it and come back to you if we need more detail. Reporting is not moderation: we do not monitor, screen, or moderate the Platform, and we cannot guarantee any particular outcome or timeframe. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 111 first.

Closing your account. You can delete your account and personal information at any time from Me โ†’ Delete my account in the app, at haeretahi.com/delete-account.html, or by emailing kiaora@haeretahi.com. Any upcoming trips you are hosting will be cancelled and the families booked on them told. Deletion cannot be undone. Some records may be retained where we must keep them to resolve a dispute or meet a legal obligation.

9. Privacy

We collect your name, mobile number, email address, and general location to operate the Platform, in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020. Other members can see only your name and general location โ€” never your mobile number or email address. "General location" means your suburb, town or district only; we never collect or show a street address or a precise or GPS location. Trip details are visible to registered members only. Private invitations are visible only to the sender and recipient. A trip owner may restrict a member's access to their trip details; that member is not notified. Other members can see that you have completed the driver declaration and when it was given, but we never collect or hold your licence number, insurance policy details, or copies of any documents. After a completed trip, members may rate each other. There are only two questions each way and no free-text comments: about a driver, "Was the trip safe?" and "Would you join them again?"; about a rider, "Was the rider fine (behaviour, on time)?" and "Would you take them again?". Ratings are displayed to other members only as anonymous aggregates linked to your profile, except that a member rated in their capacity as host/driver can see the identity of members who rated them. Ratings are opinions of members, not of Haere Tahi. You may request access to or correction of your personal information at any time. Our Privacy Policy sets all of this out in full.

10. No warranties

The Platform is provided free of charge, "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind. We do not guarantee that information posted by members is accurate, that trips will occur, or that the Platform will be uninterrupted or error-free. Nothing in these Terms limits rights you may have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986 that cannot lawfully be excluded. We do not exclude or limit any right that cannot lawfully be excluded.

11. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the total liability of Haere Tahi and its operators arising out of or in connection with the Platform, however arising, is excluded; where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to NZ$100. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded under New Zealand law, and nothing affects cover that may be available under the Accident Compensation Act 2001 (ACC).

12. Indemnity

You indemnify Haere Tahi and its operators against any claim, loss, or expense (including legal costs) arising from your use of the Platform, your breach of these Terms, any trip or transport you arrange or provide, or your dealings with other members.

13. Changes and termination

We may change these Terms, or suspend or close the Platform, at any time. Continued use after a change constitutes acceptance. You may close your account at any time.

14. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand and the parties submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.

Ride-share disclaimer (summary shown in-app)
